The crew of Risky Business didn't take any chances on the first day of the Mako Marine Fort Lauderdale Billfish Tournament on Friday.
With bad weather and tough fishing conditions predicted for today and Sunday, Risky Business made the most of Friday's hot bite by catching and releasing 10 sailfish to lead the 36th annual tournament with 2,000 points.
"We were in fish all day," said Mike Bondurant, who fished with fellow Fort Lauderdale residents Art Greenfeder, Marc Wilson, Dylan Petrie and Jason Roe on Greenfeder's 31-foot Contender.
L&H was second with seven sailfish releases and Money Shot was third with six fish. Two boats had five fish and five boats had four fish.
For the day, the 239 anglers fishing on 71 boats released 111 sailfish. The top boat wins $10,000.
The Risky Business crew was happy with the strong start but far from content.
"To put it in golf terms, today we shot a 60," Roe said. "I want to shoot a 67 Saturday and par on Sunday."
Risky Business caught its fish using live goggle-eyes on kite lines and flat lines in 107-207 feet off Miami. Roe said he and his mates started the day by catching seven consecutive sailfish. They ended up going 10 for 15.
The first sailfish came at 10:19 a.m. Risky Business added four more, including a doubleheader, by 11:38. The next five fish were scattered over the afternoon, the last one biting 10 minutes before lines out.
Second-place L&H, which won the 1999 tournament, also cashed in on the good fishing off Miami. Although the big sportfisherman runs at only 17 knots, Capt. Neil Orange made the hour and 40-minute trip to get from Port Everglades Inlet to Key Biscayne. The result was three doubleheaders -- L&H landed five of those fish -- and two singles.
"We talked to a few captains who had done well there Thursday," said Brett Dudas, who fished with Matt Pipkin and brothers Rick and David Gunion. "That's why we made the gamble and ran down there."
Money Shot also got some good information and fished off Government Cut. The team of Matt Tambor, Ricky Lindner, Aron Nusbaum and Manny Menendez started off with a quick doubleheader, then picked up four singles between 1:16 p.m. and 3:41 p.m.
