If nothing else, Risky Business has time on its side heading into the
final day of the Mako Marine Fort Lauderdale Billfish Tournament.
The first-day leader of the 36th annual tournament did not catch a sailfish
Saturday but was still atop the boat standings with 10 sailfish releases
and 2,000 points.
Money Shot, which was in third place Friday, moved up to second place
with two releases Saturday and 1,600 points. Bouncer's Dusky 33 caught
four sailfish Saturday to go with four on Friday to jump from 10th place
into third, also with 1,600.
L&H did not catch a sailfish Saturday to drop from second to fourth
with 1,400 points. Chip's Ahoy II also had 1,400 points, catching three
sailfish Saturday to go from ninth place to fifth. The tourney concludes
today, with the top boat winning $10,000.
The closest pursuers to Risky Business need to catch at least three sailfish
today to move into first, as ties go to the boat that caught its last
fish first. Fishing hours today are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., which should be
an advantage for Risky Business because there has been a late sailfish
bite the past two days. The 239 anglers fishing on 71 boats caught and
released 66 sailfish Saturday, 46 of them after noon and 28 of those after
2 p.m.
"It'll be tough," said Ray Stormont of today's shortened fishing
hours (fishing the first two days was 8 a.m.-4 p.m.)
Stormont and Ron Cook, who fished on Bouncer's Dusky 33 with Capt. Bouncer
Smith, each caught two sailfish Saturday, the last three coming at 3:09,
3:34 and 3:37 p.m. off Fowey Light.
"We only needed to fish a half hour today," Stormont joked.
"We had a tripleheader, but one fish got tangled in the line and
one pulled the hook and Ron got one. Then Ron and I caught a doubleheader."
Risky Business, which went 10 for 15 on Friday, saw Smith's crew catch
fish, but could not buy a sailfish bite Saturday.
"We fished the same area we fished Friday," Jason Roe said.
"We just didn't see any fish. We were right next to Bouncer and didn't
get a bite."
Money Shot fished from Key Biscayne to north of Government Cut Saturday,
catching two of four fish -- half a doubleheader at 9:58 and a single
at 11:39 a.m. -- to move into second.
Chip's Ahoy II was one of a handful of boats that fished north of Port
Everglades Inlet. After going 4-for-6 on Friday, the team of Chip Sheehan,
Drew Kettelhut, Wes Gall and Kevin Debrincat went 3- for-7 on Saturday.
"We fished the same spot as Friday," Kettelhut said. "We
know where the fish are."
Haddie Walker had the best day Saturday, catching five single sailfish
on Sea Walker in 160 feet off Delray Beach to lead the angler standings
with 1,000 points.
"We always do well in the Delray-Boca area," said Walker, who
caught her first three fish in a 33-minute span.
The spot was so hot, Walker's third sail jumped into the boat.
"We were all racing to get out of his way," said Walker, whose
husband, Chuck, put the fish back into the water.
