Risky Business got off to a fast start and withstood a furious finish to win the Mako Marine Fort Lauderdale Billfish Tournament.
The team of Art Greenfeder, Mike Bondurant, Jason Roe, Marc Wilson and Dylan Petrie finished the three-day tournament with 13 sailfish releases. Their last release came at 12:48 p.m. Sunday. Money Shot also had 13 sailfish, five of them on Sunday, but its 13th release came 29 minutes later at 1:17 p.m. Ties go to the boat that caught its last fish first.
Risky Business won $10,000 as the top boat, plus another $16,235 in value-added categories that the crew paid extra to enter. Money Shot won a total of $10,915. Third-place Vitamin Sea caught six sailfish Sunday to leap from 21st place into third with 10 releases and won $9,820, which included $500 for the biggest dolphin of the tournament, a 37.4-pounder.
Haddie Walker won $2,000 as the top overall angler with 10 sailfish, fishing with her husband, Chuck, and Matt Hurt on Sea Walker. She caught five fish Sunday off Boca Raton.
Risky Business had caught 10 sailfish Friday to take a comfortable lead with 2,000 points but went fishless Saturday to make things interesting. Money Shot went into the final day in second place, 400 points behind.
Rather than make a long run south for a third day, Greenfeder and his crew decided to fish off Fort Lauderdale between Birch State Park and the steeple in the hopes of getting quick bites and padding the lead.
"We said last night, Let's go to the place where we always catch fish,'" Roe said. "We thought one or two fish would do."
The plan looked to be working when Roe, top male angler with seven sailfish, hooked a sailfish at 8:15 a.m., but it got off.
"But the team stayed tight," Greenfeder said, "and Jason caught the next three."
A cold front that swept in Saturday night made for excellent sailfishing Sunday, as the 239 anglers competing on 71 boats released 75 sailfish for a three-day total of 252. As a result, no one on Risky Business breathed easy until the crew was told of its triumph by tournament officials at the Las Olas City Marina.
Money Shot, which went 5-for-9 fishing north of Boca Raton, actually was in the lead after catching its fourth sailfish of the day at 11:40 a.m. Risky Business regained the lead with its next two fish, then Money Shot made it close and almost pulled out an improbable win.
"We had a sailfish probably 10 feet from the boat with three minutes left and pulled the hook," said Aron Nusbaum, who fished with Manny Menendez, Matt Tambor and Ricky Lindner.
Vitamin Sea also had a shot at victory. Cliff Maddock and Matt White went 6 for 13 fishing in 175-250 feet off Palm Beach after catching four sailfish the first two days.
"It was a mess all day," Maddock said. "We had five on at one time and they were jumping everywhere and we only caught one. That was how the day started. Then we had a single, a doubleheader, a tripleheader."
